Understanding your school age child (6 – up to puberty) – UAT

At this age your child will love sharing what’s happened to them during school or at a friend’s visit.  Use this time to practice your active listening skills and where possible allow them to find solutions to their own problems.  During this age, when you want to teach them values and also how to behave in specific situations (i.e. ways to protect themselves from bullies or abuse), you can use hypothetical dilemmas (i.e “What would you do if an adult, that wasn’t mum or dad, told you to keep a secret from us and it wasn’t about a birthday gift or surprise?  How would that feel?”).  Help them to work through and think for themselves what is wrong or right so that the lesson is integrated.
